Exploring the Human Condition: A Trip to New York

This semester I get the privilege of teaching a new course: a Foundations Humanities course. Our university's foundations program (somewhat like general education courses) allows teachers to prepare and teach courses in subjects that align with their areas of speciality. While I am often known as a tech comm/rhetoric person, my love of these topics stemmed from my master's program in folklore. I'll forgo explaining why these subjects are a perfect fit, and just say that I'm happy to return to an early love: myth, legend, and archetypes.

The humanities course that I will be teaching is titled "Homer to Tolkien: Quests in the Arts." The Humanities and English departments have generously promoted my own quest through the arts by allowing me to travel with two other faculty members to New York City to explore this city's great museums and theaters.

I have started this blog to share this experience with my students and others who might also be interested in exploring the human condition as expressed through art, drama, architecture, and other media.
